Mr & Mrs James Mercante

Mercante is more than
just a wine

It is a tribute to three generations bound by passion, artistry, and tradition. The story begins in Puglia, Italy, where a young Ralph Oggiano, one of the greatest photographers of the first half of the 20th century, first discovered the ancient craft of winemaking. That passion took root in his son-in-law, Arthur Mercante, an eight-time hall-of fame boxing referee known for officiating the historic Ali-Frazier fight. Away from the spotlight, Arthur found solace in making wine, often with his close friend, a professional winemaker from Argentina, in the basement of his Garden City, New York, home.

James Mercante

Arthur's son, Captain James Mercante, a distinguished American maritime lawyer, embraced this same devotion. When he wasn't out at sea, James would join his father in the winemaking process, learning the intricacies of the craft. Years later, inspired by both the legacy of his family and the 50th anniversary of the Ali-Frazier fight, James created a commemorative Napa Valley wine—a tribute that was so well-received, it ignited a deeper desire to honor his roots. Driven by this passion, James returned to his ancestral home in Puglia, seeking to create a wine that not only celebrated his family's heritage but embodied the craftsmanship of Pugliese winemaking. Mercante Wines was born.
